Elaine Mokhtefi was an American political activist, writer, and cultural diplomat. She was born on April 18, 1928, in Queens, New York and grew up in a Jewish family. She became involved in leftist politics during her college years and joined the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
In the 1960s, Mokhtefi moved to Algeria to support the country's fight for independence from France. She became a close associate of the revolutionary leader Malcolm X and was a key figure in the black liberation movement. Mokhtefi also worked as a journalist and editor for the Algerian government.
After leaving Algeria, Mokhtefi settled in France and continued her work as a political activist and writer. She wrote several books, including "Algiers, Third World Capital" and "From Algiers to Aleppo: The History of Solidarity with the Arab People."
Mokhtefi passed away on January 4, 2018, at the age of 89. She was remembered as a dedicated activist and advocate for social justice.
